Britain’s Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa, Alistair Burt, on Friday, hailed Mauritania’s role in preserving the security of the G5 Sahel.

Burt made the comments after a discussion with the Mauritanian President, Mohammad Ould Abdel-Aziz, in the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott, according to Anadolu. He added that the UK is ready to offer its support to Mauritania in preserving this security, in addition to supporting trade and culture.

The G5 Sahel – comprised of Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger – was formed on 16 February 2014 to enable regional cooperation in development policies and security matters in the region.

Burt added that the UK is looking forward to strengthening its relations with Mauritania, pointing to the existence of two British firms working in oil and natural gas in the country. Burt also spoke of the appointment of the first British Ambassador to Mauritania in May, which he explained would “build new commercial relations to afford work opportunities for the Mauritanians and to contribute to developing the economy”.
