RewardExpert names Tokyo Narita as world’s best airport for F&B

INTERNATIONAL. RewardExpert has rated 15 major international airports based on their food & beverage offerings, with Tokyo Narita claiming the top spot.

RewardExpert, which specialises in advising travellers on how they can gain maximum benefits for spending and flying, compiled thousands of reviews from the fifteen “most-trafficked” airports outside the USA. Menu and pricing data was considered and RewardExpert based its ratings on restaurant quality, price and variety.

Its report also lists each airport’s top eatery, with information on cuisine, price range, hours of operation and location.

It’s a winner: The Sushiden sushi restaurant at Tokyo Narita Airport

RewardExpert said high quality and low prices gave Tokyo Narita an edge over its contemporaries. “Great” Japanese food included Yakitori, Sushi, Udon and Tonkatsu. The Terminal 2 Sushiden sushi restaurant was highlighted.

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport claimed second spot, with the second-lowest prices and second-highest rated food. “Lower diversity in cuisine is the only thing keeping this Taiwanese airport from its score skyrocketing even further in our rating,” RewardExpert said.

The report spotlighted Chun Shui Tang, which offers quick Chinese, Asian and Taiwanese specialities.

Local and other Asian specialities can be found at  Chun Shui Tang

Hong Kong International Airport ranked third. “You won’t find many bad places to eat in this airport and the consistency in positive reviews is remarkable,” RewardExpert noted.

The Saboten outlet, offering Japanese and Asian fast food, in Terminal 1 Departure East Hall was singled out for particular praise.

Singapore Changi Airport is fourth on the RewardExperts rating, with balanced marks across the board emanating from a “plethora” of quality culinary options. “Changi Airport particularly shines with its top-notch Cantonese food, which travellers can experience while dining at Imperial Treasure Cantonese Cuisine,” the report stated.

Hong Kong International Airport’s Saboten was also highly rated

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol was the top-rated European airport. “With a solid range of restaurants, from cheap eats to fine dining, Schiphol is one of our top international airports to eat at,” RewardExpert added.

It highlighted the Bowery Restaurant, which offers a range of Dutch, European and Asian food.

Gatwick Airport scored a higher overall cuisine ranking than its arch-rival Heathrow Airport. Quality was rated marginally below Heathrow on the RewardExperts’ scale but Gatwick’s average price rating was significantly lower. “It’s a real win for Gatwick travellers,” the report stated.

RewardExpert said Heathrow was the third-highest rated airport in terms of cuisine quality, a position that was dragged down by pricing concerns. “It’s also the most expensive airport to eat at by a large margin, making its overall ranking rather low.”

Sydney Airport, seventh overall, ranked the highest of all 15 airports in terms of culinary diversity. “The prices aren’t always great, but the food is and you can get a quality bite in a number of cuisines.”

Other airports featured included (in order) Madrid-Barajas, Munich, Frankfurt, Toronto Pearson International, Charles de Gaulle, Barcelona-El Prat and Rome Fiumicino.

Methodology

For the report, 15 of the busiest international airports were determined using the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s 2016 Annual Airport Traffic Report. Ratings were based on a scoring system using pricing and quality ratings from Yelp and TripAdvisor, as well as cuisine diversity figures from these sites and each airport’s directories. These final figures were cross-checked with JD Power and Zagat ratings.
