Ambassador Chesley Burnett “Sully” Sullenberger will speak at Truman State University as the Holman Family Distinguished Speaker on Friday, April 11. The event will be held at 7 p.m. in the Baldwin Hall Auditorium on the Kirksville campus.
Sullenberger gained international recognition on January 15, 2009, as captain of US Airways Flight 1549, when he and his crew safely landed a disabled aircraft in New York City’s Hudson River. All 155 passengers and crew members survived the emergency landing, which was later referred to as the “Miracle on the Hudson.”
The crew’s actions received global attention, leading to a Congressional resolution honoring their bravery. Sullenberger was also named the second most influential individual in Time magazine’s “Top 100 Most Influential Heroes and Icons of 2009.”
Admission to the April 11 presentation is free. Tickets are available at several locations on campus, including the Union and Involvement Office in the Student Union Building, the Advancement Office in McClain Hall Room 205, and the Admissions Office in the Ruth W. Towne Museum and Visitors Center. Tickets can also be obtained through the Kirksville Arts Association. Any remaining tickets will be available 30 minutes before the event on April 11.
