Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) recorded a 19 per cent increase in passenger traffic to Southeast Asia in 2024, after visa processes were eased in December 2023, authorities said. According to figures, 2.51 million passengers flew to destinations in Southeast Asia, up from around 2.10 million in 2023, reflecting a growing demand for travel to the region.

“The most popular destinations among travellers from Mumbai were Singapore, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur, which witnessed the highest passenger traffic,” said CSMIA spokesperson. The airport currently offers connectivity to five Southeast Asian countries —Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and Vietnam — through 133 weekly flights.

According to airport data, CSMIA handled over 14,000 air traffic movements (ATMs) between Mumbai and Southeast Asia in 2024, compared to 11,000 ATMs in 2023. In December 2024 alone, 1,295 flights operated on these routes, an increase from 1,173 in December 2023.

The steady rise in passenger numbers is attributed in part to relaxed visa policies introduced by several Southeast Asian countries. Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam have simplified entry requirements for Indian travellers, boosting demand for air travel. Considering the demand, airline companies have increased flight frequencies to accommodate growing interest from Indian tourists and business travellers.

“With simplified visa processes expected to drive further demand, CSMIA remains poised to exceed expectations, offering seamless travel, enhancing passenger services and setting new industry benchmarks in international travel,” the spokesperson said.

Festive offer

With more people travelling for work and vacations, the airport authorities have increased flight options, making travel between Mumbai and Southeast Asia easier. The airlines that operate on these routes include Singapore Airlines, Air India, IndiGo, Thai Airways, and Malaysia Airlines.
