NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Tennessee Department of Transportation has confirmed that the Interstate 40 interchange at Donelson Pike project is ahead of schedule.

The new traffic alignment near the Nashville International Airport will be live by the summer of 2025, with the entire project set to be completed in late 2026 (one year before estimated completion).

Motorists will still see intermittent work on lanes for final paving and other touches as the lanes open.

The project also includes a new intersection at Terminal Drive — TDOT’s work is occurring simultaneously with the Metro Nashville Airport Authority construction of BNA property.

TDOT said the I-40 interchange at Donelson Pike, Exit 216, will be relocated along with the existing state route.

“The newly constructed exit will be a diverging diamond interchange (DDI). The unique crisscross design of a DDI allows two directions of traffic to temporarily cross to opposite sides of the roadway in order to travel across the overpass, and then cross back and resume the original travel pattern. The DDI uses concrete dividers, stop bars, traffic signals, and extensive signage to guide motorists through the interchange.

The current interchange is a trumpet design with restricted turning movements, connecting I-40 with Donelson Pike. The current configuration cannot accommodate the current and future traffic demands of Donelson Pike and BNA.

Reconstruction of the interchange will increase capacity, correct geometric deficiencies, and improve the overall operation of the interchange, providing efficient access to the airport, I-40, and other nearby businesses.”
