Phase one of a three-phase curb-front reconfiguration project has begun at Columbia Metropolitan Airport.
During the project, estimated to be completed in roughly 60 days, a new traffic pattern will be temporarily implemented, according to a news release.
“The loading zone and drive-up lanes in this area have long been a pain point for those picking up passengers,” said Gregg Hornsby, CAE’s Interim president & CEO/CFO. “In reconfiguring this area, the curb front will extend the length of the terminal allowing for a more efficient and streamlined pick up process.”
During the construction, access to Lot A will be closed. Those needing to access Lot A — including CAE’s Premier Parking Lot cardholders — will need to follow the directional signs around the drive to the East entrance to the lot — 2902 Aviation Way. Exiting this lot will remain the same.
Access to baggage claim, the pedestrian walkway from the garage to the terminal and rental car returns will remain open during the project.

To aid this project’s impact and future movement of traffic, the airport has added additional staff, hiring four airport safety officers, according to the release. These officers will be patrolling both the upper drop-off area and the lower pick-up area in baggage claim to assist individuals as needed, as well as ensure traffic remains flowing, avoiding congestion and backups.
“With the projected increase in passenger traffic coming this summer with the addition of both Allegiant Air and Spirit Airlines, we are anticipating over 2700-plus passengers a day on certain days of the week starting in May,” said Kim Crafton, vice president of marketing and air service Development. “Reconfiguring the curb front in the baggage claim loading zone ahead of this travel spike will ensure each passenger’s overall airport experience is safe and easy,”
