Full list of Heathrow Airport flight cancellations including British Airways and Virgin

More than 1,300 flights to and from Heathrow Airport will be disrupted on Friday due to the closure of the airport following a fire at a nearby electrical substation. Thousands of homes have been left without power and more than 100 people were evacuated after a transformer within the North Hyde electrical substation caught fire in west London.

The airport, which is supplied by the substation, said it was among those impacted by the power outage. Speaking on this morning’s media round, Climate Secretary Ed Miliband said it was “too early to know” the cause of the fire. In a statement, Heathrow airport urged people to stay away, telling them not to travel to the site “under any circumstances.”

It said: “To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, we have no choice but to close Heathrow until 23h59 on 21 March 2025.

"We expect significant disruption over the coming days and passengers should not travel to the airport under any circumstances until the airport reopens."

British Airways, the airline with the biggest presence at the airport, reiterated the warning to stay away until it is reopened.

It said in a statement: “This will clearly have a significant impact on our operation and our customers and we're working as quickly as possible to update them on their travel options for the next 24 hours and beyond."

Nearby Gatwick airport vowed to support as much as it was able to do and confirmed that it is open as normal.

Around 120 flights were in the air and en route to the airport when the closure was announced. Some returned to their departure airport while others were diverted to airports around Europe, leaving many stranded.

The subsequent disruption is like none experienced since the 2010 Icelandic volcano eruption which closed the majority of European airspace and cost the industry billions of pounds.

Online flight tracking service FlightRadar24 said the closure would affect more than 1,350 flights to and from Heathrow. This includes 679 scheduled to land and 678 due to take off from the airport.
