The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Wednesday issued a ground stop advisory for Alaska Airlines. A tab on the FAA website reads: "All Alaska mainline and subcarrier flights ground stopped." The agency further said that Seattle-based carrier "asked the FAA to pause the airline’s mainline departures nationwide." No specific reason was provided.
The airline soon informed that the ground stop had expired.
In a statement to Times Now, Alaska Airlines clarified that it had requested a ground stop for all Alaska and Horizon flights following a system issue. It said that an issue arose 'while performing an upgrade to the system that calculates our weight and balance'.
"This morning we experienced an issue while performing an upgrade to the system that calculates our weight and balance. Out of an abundance of caution, we requested a ground stop for all Alaska and Horizon flights, which was instituted at approximately 7:30am PT," the airline said.
It further added that the stop expired at 8:30 AM PT. "The issue was mitigated and the ground stop for Alaska and Horizon flights expired at 8:30am PT. We have begun releasing flights. Residual delays are expected throughout the day. We apologize for the inconvenience and encourage guests to check the status of their flights on alaskaair.com or the Alaska App prior to heading to the airport."
The FAA advisory had said that flights for SkyWest, which provides regional service for Alaska Airlines and others, were excluded.
Meanwhile, customers took to social media to post their frustration.
"Crew on plane; you can deplane, just stay close by the gate. Gate crew: you can’t get off the plane. Back and forth," one woman wrote on X, platform formerly known as Twitter.
