The best science fair projects from Fraser Valley students were on display at the Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) on Thursday, April 11.
Students from Langley, Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, and Hope participated as a class, group, or as individuals.
A total of 116 projects were presented to both the public and judges and were eligible to win cash and prizes.
Students from Grades 7 to 12 have the chance to be selected to represent Team BC at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa with all expenses paid.
“I am very excited to be here,” said Grade 5 student Avneet Singh Sandhu from Dasmesh Punjabi School. “I have been waiting for this day.”
Sandhu did his project on plant photosynthesis, but there were topics ranging from global warming to mental health and even a 3-D printer.
At Dasmesh Punjabi School in Abbotsford the first round was in-class.
Five projects are originally chosen from each class, which was then narrowed down to three. Those three presented at the Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair.
“I was not expecting to make it through the first round,” said Gurnihaal Singh Bains, a Grade 4 student.
The event is meant to spark the imagination and love for science, which is exactly what occurred for Grade 8 students Japandeep Gill and Metaab Khangura.
Khangura was at Vancouver International Airport ready to depart on a flight when his family could not find parking. Unfortunately, his family ended up missing their flight.
This upsetting circumstance inspired Khangura to create a sensor that drivers can install in their vehicle which would connect to robotic sensors in the poles of the parking lot. Not only would it allow drivers to find a stall in a busy lot, but they can find their vehicle easily when they come back.
Gill and Khangura were excited to share their project, saying “we want to go to nationals!”
The duo, along with the other young scientists, will find out how they did at the awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 17.
