Amid working with the city to gather needed documents for a transfer of properties and an official charter through the Federal Aviation Administration, members of the Corry Airport Authority are setting their sights on a summer poker run, fly-in breakfast and youth pilot training next fall in conjunction with local school districts.
Misty Weber, virtual academy services and STEM academy administrator for Warren County School District, joined a May 23 airport work session via phone to discuss a potential partnership. The idea is to provide students learning about flight in the classroom a viable training site at Corry-Lawrence Airport, where they can get their flight hours in and eventually finish their pilot certifications.
The district recently purchased a flight simulator, Weber said, and is promoting a career pathway of pilot.
“We’re trying to connect with other people who can help to further that pathway,” Weber said.
Charles Gray, airport authority secretary, said representatives from the Corry Airport Authority, Corry Area School District and Corry Higher Education Council are planning a June visit to an aeronautics school in Steubenville, Ohio, which could provide a model for what they’re trying to do in Corry.
Sue Bogert, supervisor of vocational education for CASD, said the technology education department is exploring the possibility of offering a course related to becoming a pilot, but there is no discussion of adding a full Career and Technical Education program at this time.
Gray said the authority hopes to partner with CASD and Union CIty Area School District, too.
“Our hope is that we can make our airport a training center,” Gray said, adding that the goal would be to have an instructor onsite to help. This service could potentially be provided through Flight Fundamentals, the fixed base operator, and authority member Logan Hunt is a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) as well.
Brock Allen, who chairs the airport authority, emphasized the importance of fostering public interest in the airport, particularly among young people.
Plans are also underway for a fly-in breakfast fundraiser and a poker run this summer. The poker run would include multiple airports where pilots would stop to collect a card. They must hit each of the listed airports on the route and end up in Corry, where they will compare hands for the chance to earn prizes.
The Corry Airport Authority is accepting sealed requests for qualifications (RFQs) for a PA Aviation Bar qualified solicitor, or a firm that has a formal agreement with one. RFQs must be marked “Solicitor Sealed RFQ - City of Corry Airport Authority” and received no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, at Impact Corry, 4 S. Center St., Corry PA 16407. They will be opened publicly at the next airport meeting, which is scheduled for 4 p.m. on June 13 at Impact Corry.
