Strike causes Wednesday cancellation of airBaltic flights to Berlin

Strike action in Germany planned for Wednesday will cause the cancellation of hundreds of flights, including two operated by Latvian carrier airBaltic.

The airline has announced that flights BT211 and BT212 from Rīga (RIX) to Berlin Brandenburg airport (BER) have been canceled on Wednesday. Passengers should contact the airline's Customer Service or Call Center to find the best alternative solution, such as rescheduling.

According to website of Berlin Airport, about 300 flights were planned Wednesday, which would serve a total of 35 thousand customers. Representatives of the German trade union "Ver.di" state that they are on strike because they want the wages of airport employees to be increased by 500 euros per month and the terms of their collective agreement to be changed. The claim concerns about 6,000 employees, but all negotiations with the airport management have so far ended without results. 

Meanwhile, the airline TAP Air Portugal has also announced numerous flight cancellations as a result of a strike by employees which will last from January 25 to 31. This could affect about 156 thousand passengers.
