BWI-Marshall sees increased traffic as CDC issues new guidelines

New guidelines released Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention could give a new boost to airports.

Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport has recently seen a steady rise of departing travelers and expects more in the coming months. With almost 23,000 departing passengers, last Friday was the busiest day at BWI-Marshall since Maryland’s COVID-19 state of emergency took effect.

According to the CDC’s new travel guidelines, fully vaccinated people can now travel within the U.S. and no COVID-19 testing or post-travel self-quarantining is required.

“It makes me feel comfortable traveling and knowing the fact that we have been vaccinated, we have both our vaccines, we received both of them, so we feel kind of comfortable, but we’re still going to be safe,” said Cherie Brown, a traveler.

“I just feel better knowing that people are vaccinated and following the CDC unless cases being reported,” said Sharon Morazzani, a traveler.

“I’ve already had both of my shots, so I’m pretty comfortable,” said Robert Polston, a traveler. “If it makes it me and other people feel more comfortable, OK.”

Even before the CDC’s announcement, BWI-Marshall officials said they saw a steady increase in departing passenger traffic, so much so the airport reopened its Long Term A parking lot Thursday. The lot was temporarily closed in March 2020 due to the pandemic.

“I’m sure I feel a little bit more comfortable with vaccinations becoming more mainstream, but regardless, that’s not going to stop me from living my life,” said Jessica Tiller, a traveler.

BWI-Marshall officials reported March 2021 saw an 11% increase in departing passengers when compared to March 2020.
