SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. (KTXL) — A wind-swept grass fire burning near Sacramento International Airport prompted some road closures and shut down part of Interstate 5 Tuesday afternoon. 

“Very windy day and as you can see, it jumped several roads,” said Sacramento Fire Battalion Chief Darin Snedeker.  

Fire officials said the fire grew to roughly 850 acres and impacted two abandoned homes and nearby structures along West Elkhorn Road. 

“That structure was abandoned and it was destroyed. This structure here is also abandoned but the crews were able to save it,” Snedeker explained.  

Around 100 firefighters battled the blaze and later mopped up hotspots, according to Snedeker. 

“The crews were able to stop it at I-5. They did great work. It looks like they’re just putting out hotspots now,” Snedeker said.  

Winds pushed the smoke toward I-5, making visibility nearly impossible and forcing the California Highway Patrol to shut down the highway in both directions for a portion of the afternoon. 

CHP has since said both directions of I-5 at Highway 99 and Airport Boulevard have reopened.  

Officials are still warning drivers to be cautious while traveling through the smoke. 

The CHP says Elkhorn Boulevard from Highway 99 to Metro Air Parkway is still closed as they try to clear power lines that have fallen in the roadway.  

Officials do not know when the roadway will be reopened. 

It was not immediately known what started the fire, but a Red Flag Warning is in effect for much of the state due to dangerous fire conditions, including gusty winds and low humidity.
