Jet2 has cancelled all flights to mainland Spain and parts of Croatia for the remainder of the summer, it has been announced.

People will not be able to fly to tourist destinations including Alicante, Malaga, Barcelona, Dubrovnik or Split using the airline. The summer officially ends in the UK on September 22.

In a statement, the company said: "Because of the ongoing uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the current UK Government advice, we have taken the difficult decision to suspend all flights and holidays to Mainland Spain (affecting Alicante, Malaga and Barcelona) and Dubrovnik and Split for the rest of Summer 2020.

"We are obviously very disappointed to be making this announcement, as we know how much our customers look forward to their well-deserved holidays in these fantastic destinations."

The spokesperson said people would be able to re-book with no administration fee, get a refund credit note, or a full cash refund, and they were contacting customers to discuss these options.

They continued: "To give customers more choice when it comes to booking or rebooking their Summer 2020 holidays, we recently announced hundreds of new flights to in-land destinations, representing almost 100,000 additional seats.

"That demand tells us that customers want to get away for their well-deserved holidays.

"We continue to urge the Government to do more to help holidaymakers by implementing a targeted approach to travel advice, instead of the current blanket ban approach.

"We can assure our customers and partners across mainland Spain that we remain completely committed to these fantastic destinations.

"Bookings for next summer are looking strong, and we cannot wait to be back doing what we do best - working with hoteliers and our partners in these destinations to make sure our customers enjoy their well-deserved holidays."

The company earlier said that outbound flights to parts of Croatia would stop on September 6, reports The Mirror.

On Thursday, Philip Meeson, executive chairman of the airline's owner Dart Group, said that winter prices would be 'enticing'.

He told The Sun:"Winter 20/21 forward bookings have yet to match our revised on-sale seat capacity, with customer bookings displaying a shorter lead time than in previous years.

"Therefore, pricing for both our leisure travel products - end-to-end package holidays with Jet2holidays and flight-only seats with Jet2.com - will need to remain consistently enticing.

"For Summer 2021, we plan to fly to all our popular leisure destinations with an appropriate, tailored level of service, which we anticipate will be close to Summer 2019 seat capacity levels."
