“Tenants to pay 0.78 percent stamp duty” – FIRS clarifies

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has clarified the details of stamp duties to be paid by tenants after the intense public backlash last week upon the announcement of a mandate for landlords and property agents to charge 6 percent Stamp Duty on all tenancy and lease agreements.

Director, Tax Policy of the FIRS, Mathew Gbonjubola, explained during a webinar conference that “the 6% stamp duty is for tenancy above 21 years while 7 to 21 years lease or tenancy attracts 3% and less than a 7-year tenancy.”

Also, the stamp duty on rent or lease only applies to new agreements and not to renewals.

“Suspend increase in license fees for logistics services” – FG orders NIPOST

The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami has ordered the suspension of any increase in license fees for courier and logistic services, as earlier communicated by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST).

Contrary to the memo announcing the increase in license fees for courier and logistics services that circulated on social media on Friday, Pantami insists that even though he had earlier approved new regulations for the courier and logistics industry, an increase in license fees was not part of the package.

“Our attention has been drawn to an increase of licence fee, which was not part of the regulation I earlier APPROVED for you. Your Chair and PMG were YESTERDAY contacted to put the implementation on hold and send a report to our ministry by Monday. Best wishes!”  Pantami said in a statement on Twitter
