PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (AP) - Three airlines are bidding to provide service to the Presque Isle International Airport starting in July.
Airport Director Scott Wardwell says city officials have begun the task of reviewing the three bids they received under the essential air service program. A public meeting will be held on Jan. 3.
Bids were submitted by the airport’s current vendor, United Airlines, along with Silver Airways and Southern Airways Express.
Airport Director Scott Wardell tells WABI-TV that United would continue to fly to Newark Liberty International Airport with 50-seat regional jets.
He said Silver would use a 34-seat turboprop and Southern use a nine-seat turboprop. Both Silver and Southern would fly into Boston, but Southern also offers the option of flying to Portland.
The Essential Air Service program ensures that small communities that were served by certificated air carriers before airline deregulation maintain a minimal level of scheduled air service.
