Chess: Kenya Commercial Bank maintains lead after massive wins

Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Chess Club maintained their lead at the helm of the 2019 Kenya Premier League after winning all their three matches to extend their unbeaten run in the league to 13 matches.

The 2018 runner-up saw off their opponents without their star captain Ben Magana, defeating both Daystar University and Mombasa Chess Club 5-0 and Black Knights 4.5- 0.5 to lead the standings with 39 points.

In an interview with the Standard Sports, Fide Master Harold Wanyama said their goal of winning the competition this year is slowly becoming a reality given their improved performance over the weeks.

“The team played well over the weekend. We have a plan of dethroning current holders Equity and that strategy is slowly working as we are now eight points ahead of them,” said the Ugandan import.

Deadly Bishops moved to second place with 36 points, three points off leaders KCB but with one match ahead of the bankers.

The Bishops saw off Nairobi Chess Club and Prox Chess House with a score of 3.5-1.5 before thumping Knight Riders 5-0.

However, defending champions Equity Chess Club dropped to third in the log after suffering a 3-2 defeat to Anchor Chess Club and latter drawing 2.5-2.5 against Nairobi Chess Club.

Mathew Kamau, Moses Wang'ombe and Daphne Mwikali lost their board matches against Mike Akabo, Kimani Kimingi and Annete Kimwere respectively of Anchor Chess to suffer their first defeat of the season.

Equity won only one match against Mombasa Chess Club who did not show up for their match. The bankers now have 31 points but with one game in hand compared to KCB’s 13 matches played.

Other matches saw NACHA Kings win 4.5-0.5 against Anchor Chess Club, Lighthouse Chess Club lost 5-0 to Technical University of Kenya, Nairobi Chess Club hit Eastlands Chess Club 5-0.
