A group of militant vegans have targeted a poultry aisle in Waitrose as a protest against the sale of turkeys for Christmas dinner.

Activists from the group Brighton Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) used a megaphone to shout ‘You can’t shop in peace when you are buying death’ at customers trying to do their food shop.

They also held pictures of the birds with the caption ‘we want to live’, while another sign said: ‘Turkeys are killed between nine and 21 weeks old. They are just babies.’

The group were lead out of the Brighton store by police officers but then took to the front of the shop and began chanting: ‘It’s not food, it’s violence.’

After the protest, DxE released a statement which said Christmas time is ‘carnage for so many animals’.

It added: ‘We want animal liberation, and we want it now.

‘Here to be heard on behalf of the animals whose screams are silenced. Hitting Waitrose, on Western Rd in Brighton city centre, we made a stand.

‘You can’t shop in peace when you’re buying death. Christmas is carnage for so many animals.’

Last month, DxE stormed Touro Steakhouse in Brighton playing recordings of cows being slaughtered.

But a group of men on a stag do chanted back at them and made mooing sounds, prompting the protesters to leave.

In recent weeks they have targeted other supermarkets, lining meat aisles at local Tesco and Lidl stores to deliver their message.

Last week at a Lidl they held pictures of turkeys saying ‘I am an individual, with a personality’.
