Thousands of passengers were stranded at Lanzarote airport tonight after flights to the UK were cancelled.

The Canary Islands were battered by heavy rain and winds of up to 70mph.

Flights into the islands were diverted during the day while many flights were cancelled.

David Munro, from Port Glasgow, was due to travel back to Glasgow with his partner.

Scots are unable to get home from Lanzarote airport as storms sweep the Canaries
Families have been stuck for hours and left with no food

He said:”Our flight should have taken off at 3.10, but here we are hours later stranded at the airport.

“This has affected hundreds of people.

“There are people lying about the airport all over the place, people with children.

“We’ve just been told they will keep the airport open all night, but Thomas Cook have told us we will need to pay for any overnight accomodation.

“And they have told us to phone the airport at 8am.

“All we’ve had so far is a £10 food voucher.

“There have only been two Thomas Cook reps here, and they have not been able to tell us very much.”

It is thought more than 60 flights were affected by the storm.

Some fed up passengers tweeted their frustration.

One wrote: "Been at Lanzarote airport since 4pm, flight has been cancelled to Gatwick, have not been given any food or drink and still waiting to hear where we are staying tonight. I’ve got a distressed 2 year old and no one knows how much longer we’ve got to wait around. Not happy.”

Another said: "#ThomasCook can you advise. Delayed by 3 hours at Lanzarote airport without any information.”

And another said: “#thomascook @ThomasCookUK my family are stuck at Lanzarote airport and have been for 5 hours and you haven’t fed them yet.
