LSU linebacker Michael Divinity Jr. intercepted Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald on the 3rd play of the game. Three players later, Tiger running back Nick Brosette scored a 1 yard touchdown to put his team up 7-0. It was the last touchdown of the night.

A defensive slugfest on a rainy night at Tiger Stadium followed, with LSU's elite defense leading the Tigers to a 19-3 victory, smothering the Bulldogs andprocuring 4 interceptions.

"I thought our defense played lights out," said head coach Ed Orgeron. "Obviously we struggled on offense a little bit but we came out in the second half and moved the football."

LSU only generated 239 yards of total offense, as each team punted 7 times.

The Tigers D was led by safety Grant Delpit, who picked off Fitzgerald twice, making plays all over the field.

"Those plays Grant Delpit made tonight were phenomenal," said Orgeron.

Fitzgerald averaged 2.6 yards per pass completion, going 8-24 on the night. He did most of his damage on the ground, running for 131 yards, giving the Bulldogs a few sparks of offense, but nothing sustainable.

LSU kicker Cole Tracy was a perfect 4-4 on field goals, continuing his march to earning All-American honors.

Another Tiger who has been playing like an All-American is linebacker Devin White. Late in the game, he was called for "targeting" after making contact with Fitzgerald.

Tiger Stadium booed the officials for the rest of the game, as the call appears to be a weak one. Judge for yourself.

The "targeting" penalty means White will be suspended for the first half of LSU's next game, a matchup in two weeks against #1 Alabama.

With the win, the #5 Tigers improve to 7-1 overall, 4-1 in conference play.

Next week is the bye, then LSU welcomes #1 Alabama (8-0, 5-0) to Death Valley on November 3rd.
