American Airlines passengers face chaos as more than 500 flights are canceled and delays are expected to last for days because of a computer problem

American Airlines is continuing to experience a massive disruption after canceling hundreds of flights on Tuesday because of computer problems at an affiliate, PSA Airlines.

More than 500 PSA flights were canceled, according to tracking service FlightStats.

American said in a statement that PSA, which is owned by the airliner and operates many of its Eagle flights and smaller regional jets, was experiencing a crew scheduling and tracking system issue. 

The airliner tweeted Tuesday that PSA stabilized its computer systems and was trying to resume a normal schedule, but warned that disruptions were likely to continue for PSA-operated flights 'over the next few days', USA Today reports.

'We understand that these cancelations have been frustrating for our customers, and teams from PSA and American have been working around the clock to get things back to normal as quickly as possible,' American said in its statement, 'We are rebooking passengers and American's Customer Relations department continues to reach out all affected customers. We encourage our customers traveling on PSA-operated flights over the next few days to check their flight status at aa.com or on the American Airlines app.'    

Many of the canceled or delayed flights have been in Charlotte, North Carolina, a major American Airlines hub but hubs in Philadelphia and Washington Reagan National have also experienced delays.    

The technical issue first surfaced last Thursday causing American to cancel more than 250 flights. Since the computer problems began, more than 1,000 flights have been canclled.

American has been providing hotel accommodations and meal vouchers for affected passengers. According to the Charlotte Observer, the airliner covered the tab for about 800 hotel rooms since the glitch.

Several travelers have said they missed work, family functions and other events because of the canceled flights.

'It's been horrible, just horrible. My father spent a pretty penny for me and my son to come out and visit and to be treated like this is terrible,' traveler Shelia Dugan told WSOCTV.

Angela Watkins said she owns a daycare and had to shut her business down because she's been stranded at the Charlotte airport.  

'We've been here since Wednesday,' she said, adding that the cancelations have caused her to miss pay.
