Costa Rica plays Scotland on March 23 at Hampden Park in Glasgow and Tunisia on March 27 at Allianz Riviera in Nice, France.

Costa Rica qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup last fall; Waston scored the goal that ultimately secured his team’s qualification.

Waston is still expected to play Saturday against Atlanta United. He’s been capped 17 times by the national team.

In Waston’s place, with Doneil Henry still injured, bet on José Aja making his first Whitecaps start, partnering with Aaron Maund in central defence.

Aja, a 24-year-old Uruguayan, was acquired before the season from Orlando City. He played 15 times for the Lions in 2017.

At Carl Robinson’s request, none of the Whitecaps’ Canadian internationals — Russell Teibert, Marcel de Jong (now injured) and Alphonso Davies — were called up by national team coach John Herdman. Goalie Stefan Marinovic, a regular starter for New Zealand, was not called up as well.

Yordy Reyna was not called up by Peru for “sporting reasons, nothing else,” said coach Ricardo Gareca. “We believe this list of players gave us more peace of mind for these two matches,” he said.
