Frontier Airlines has suspended service at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport indefinitely.

A spokesperson with the airline said the termination of service at BHM is due to a lack of demand.

The Denver-based, ultra-low-cost air carrier said in September 2019 it would take a seasonal hiatus, halting its flights from BHM to Orlando and Denver in November 2019. The airline had already removed its service from BHM to Philadelphia soon after launching at the airport in February 2018.

The airline spokesperson confirmed it also will suspend operations at Mobile Downtown Airport (BFM) in April 2020 – also due to lack of sufficient demand for service. The airline began servicing BFM in May 2019.

The airline offers flights to Orlando from Huntsville and will begin offering service from HSV to Denver on May 1.

"This decision will not cause BHM to lose any nonstop destinations. Frontier recently served the cities of Orlando and Denver, however, both Orlando and Denver are served nonstop from Birmingham by other airlines operating at BHM," a BHM spokesperson told the BBJ. "While this is not the outcome we had hoped for, the Birmingham Airport Authority will continue to work diligently to meet with other airlines to expand flight offerings at BHM."

According to the statistical monthly report from BHM, Frontier held 0.69% of market share, serving 1,819 passengers in November.

Frontier's debut in Birmingham was largely cheered, as it brought a low-cost option to BHM and also expanded service – two things the business community had been advocating for.
