Southwest Airlines handed out $5,000 checks to various passengers after an engine explosion earlier this week that resulted in an emergency landing.

A few passengers on the flight from New York City to Dallas received checks to “restore confidence” in the airline due to a passenger death on the Tuesday flight, reported HuffPost.

“We value you as our customer and hope you will allow us another opportunity to restore your confidence in Southwest as the airline you can count on for your travel needs,” a letter sent to one recipient read. “In this spirit, we are sending you a check in the amount of $5,000 to cover any of your immediate financial needs.”

A woman was partially sucked out of the Tuesday flight when the Southwest airplane began experiencing engine trouble. The engine exploded and shrapnel caused the window next to the woman to break. Passengers scrambled to pull her back in as she was sucked out.

The pilot made an emergency landing; the woman later died from her injuries.

Southwest Airlines confirmed they sent out the vouchers, adding they were focusing on

“Ours is a company and culture built on relationships. Many of the Customers on that flight have flown with us before. We can confirm the communication and gesture are authentic and heartfelt,” the airlines said.
